The Benefits of Professional Brick Repair and Repointing

When it comes to protecting your property, few things are as crucial – or as overlooked – as proper brick maintenance. Over time, exposure to the elements can cause mortar to weaken and bricks to shift or crack. That’s where professional repointing and brick repair make all the difference, preserving both appearance and structure.

What Is Brick Repointing?

The careful removal of old, deteriorated mortar and replacing it with fresh, breathable material – often Natural Hydraulic Lime for traditional builds. This process not only improves the visual finish but also reinforces the wall’s structural integrity. Whether it’s a heritage home or a modern build, timely repointing prevents deeper, costlier damage.

Why Invest in Brick Repair and Repointing?
  • Protects Structural Stability – Cracks in bricks and decayed mortar can lead to long-term damage. High-quality brick repair and timely repointing extend the life of your walls and reduce the risk of future issues.
  • Prevents Moisture Damage – Gaps in the mortar allow water penetration, leading to damp, frost damage, and even internal decay. Repointing provides a weather-tight seal that helps avoid these problems.
  • Restores Aesthetic Value – Worn or damaged masonry can age a building prematurely. Fresh brick repair and crisp mortar joints from repointing revitalise kerb appeal instantly.
  • Boosts Energy Efficiency – Unsealed walls allow heat to escape, but well-executed pointing improves insulation and reduces drafts – helping cut energy bills.
  • Increases Property Value – Prospective buyers and surveyors notice well-maintained brickwork. Pointing not only improves how a property looks but signals quality and care.
Signs You Need Brick Repair or Repointing
  •  Crumbling or missing mortar
  • Loose, cracked, or damaged bricks
  • White staining on surfaces (efflorescence)
  • Signs of damp or cold patches indoors
  • Mortar over 30 years old or never professionally assessed
A Sustainable Approach to Masonry

Frequently Asked Questions

A varying number of factors can cause brickwork to require repointing, such as frost, building movement, acidic rain and even plants. As the existing mortar is softer than the surrounding bricks it will usually be the first to fail and crumble.

Repointing is the process of repairing existing pointing, this requires removal of the damaged material also known as raking out, and refilling with a new mortar mix.

Repointing protects the building from water ingress and is also used to fill any irregularities on the faces of the bricks or blocks.

The average life span of a well made mortar joint is 20 to 30 years. Depending on how weathered certain walls have become may mean you need a whole building repairing or just sections refreshing.
